Leadville 2002, Race Outbound
I've divided the race into two parts.....The outbound race, and the inbound race.....

The starting line, just before the start....

Mona and Jose, moments before the 4 AM Saturday morning start.

Then there was the start, and this was all that was left!

Well except for this guy with the miles to go till beer sign.....
After the start the runners run toward the May Queen campground, the aid station aptly named
May Queen Aid Station

Kim, Barbara, Lenny, and Joan await there respective runners at the May Queen aide station.

A runner arrivng at May Queen Aid Station, around 6:30 AM Saturday , 13.5 miles into the race.

The May Queen Aid Station before the throngs attack it!

Jose in the May Queen aid station.

Jose leaving May Queen....

Brenda leaving May Queen
The Runners(and the Crews!) then head to the next aid station "Outward Bound",
or as everyone calls it "Fish Hatchery", mainly because it is at the Leadville Natural Fish Hatchery.
Here is the Aid Station at Fish Hatchery.

The beer sign made it to the Fish Hatchery....

Jose runs into the Fish Hatchery aid station....around 7:42 AM Saturday, 23.5 miles into the race.

Jose getting food and hydration at Fish Hatchery.

Barbara crewing Brenda outside the Fish Hatchery aid Station....
So after a run through Halfmoon Camp Ground, they head into the Twin Lakes Aid Station, at the thriving metropolis of Twin Lakes, CO, pop. 27.....

Twin Lakes crew parking...... the runners run through this parking lot.

The Twin Lakes Aid Station.

Brenda's crew: Erica, Lenny, Barbara at Twin Lakes.

Brenda in and out of Twin Lakes quickly.

Some guys will carry anything to have there picture taken!

Jose telling Joan what he would like from the aid station, 12:42 AM Saturday, 39.5 miles into the race.

Joan walks with jose out of Twin Lakes Aid Station.

Oh, by the way, no smoking near the runners, I guess they're high octane!

Twin Lakes was the the crews favorite stop, because of the Nordic Inn breakfasts, but, now the Nordic Inn has become a Bed and Breakfast, so they only serve registered guests. This started a heated debate about getting a room so we can get breakfast, but alas no vacancies!
So we ate at a delightful little cafe, called the Wind Spirit Cafe, which was were this photo was taken.
So after the crew eats breakfast, they head off to the Winfield Aid Station. Winfield is a deserted ghost mining community....

The aid station at Winnfield.

Where crew park....great view!

The beer sign arrived at Winfield....

Brenda arrives at Winfield and savors the delicacies there.....3:41 PM Saturday, 50 miles into the race.

Jose at Winfield.

Kim & John at Winifield...

You can check out the Aspens on the way in and out of Winfield.
Off to the Race Inbound page.....We're only half done, still 50 miles to go!
